As a seasoned traveler and member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have visited countless destinations across the globe. But there's one place that stands out for me - the Maldives. A stunning archipelago situated in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is a tropical paradise renowned for its crystal-clear waters, powdery white sands, and rich marine life. But for gay travelers like me, the Maldives offers so much more than just breathtaking landscapes. In this article, I'll share why I love the Maldives so much and why it's a must-visit for any gay traveler seeking sun, sea, and adventure. I’ve been to the Maldives with my life partner, my business partner, my nephew, with friends, and with our travelers (on separate occasions) and each time made for a wonderful experience. The following are five of my favorite things about the Maldives.
1. Stunning Natural Beauty - It's no secret that the Maldives is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. And as a gay traveler, it's even more captivating. The Maldives comprises over 1,000 coral islands, each with its own unique setting and charm. Whether you're looking for a lively beachside villa or a secluded water bungalow, the Maldives has it all. What's more, the pristine beaches and turquoise waters offer the perfect backdrop for romantic sunsets, underwater adventures, and photography sessions.
2. Open-minded Attitude - Unlike some destinations that can be less than welcoming to gay travelers, the Maldives has an open-minded attitude that makes it an ideal getaway. While it's not legal to be gay in the Maldives destination, the resort islands in the Maldives are nonetheless gay-friendly and accepting of LGBTQ+ visitors, provided they show respect for local culture and customs. And you will see LGBTQ+ staff members at almost every property. Gay couples can enjoy private dinners, intimate spa treatments, and secluded beach excursions without fear of discrimination. I have met LGBTQ+ visiting couples at almost every resort I have visited
In fairness, I have had conversations with some who do not want to give their money to places where it’s not legal to be gay. If you feel this way then the Maldives is clearly not for you and you should by all means not travel there. On the other hand, there are many LGBTQ+ travelers like me that feel that visiting a destination where they feel comfortable, even if it is not legal to be gay there, means that they will contribute to changing the minds of the local population who may not otherwise be exposed to LGBTQ+ people. Again, feel free to vote your conscious with your wallet. That is definitely a valid approach. I am not trying to change any minds here. As someone who loves travel, I am providing my personal experience about an exotic destination where I feel very welcomed and comfortable. Every time I have been in the Maldives I have met LGBTQ+ travelers as well as employees of the resorts. Heck, I even travel with a rainbow wristband and have gotten the occasional smile and wink of approval and never a strange look. It’s even encouraged a young Maldivian lady to come out to me. How cool is that!
3. Great Social Scene - For gay travelers who love to socialize and connect with like-minded people, the Maldives has plenty to offer. Many of the hotels and resorts organize social events, parties, and activities that are welcoming to LGBTQ+ guests. You can attend pool parties, wine tastings, sunset cruises, and dance nights and make new friends from around the world. Even if you're traveling solo or with a partner, the Maldives social scene guarantees a fun, lively, and engaging experience. My partner and I were even invited to be judges at a resort to a fun contest being held on the island, and I was introduced as the "owner of Zoom Vacations, a leader in LGBTQ+ luxury travel” as the master of ceremonies proudly announced on the microphone to a full house. And you guessed it! I had one of the employees come out to me at breakfast and tell me that it was empowering to them to welcome people like me, out and proud, to their community.
4. Endless Water Sports - The Maldives is famous for its water sports and activities. Snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding are just some of the options available to visitors. Beyond the sheer joy of experiencing the aquatic world, these water sports offer unique opportunities to connect with nature, explore new environments, and challenge yourself. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, the Maldives has ideal conditions for every skill level. And if you just want to sit with a glass of champagne looking at gorgeous scenery, then the sunset dolphin cruises are the place for you.
5. Exceptional Dining and Accommodation - Finally, one of the reasons why I love the Maldives is the exceptional dining and accommodation options. From luxurious overwater villas to rustic beach huts, the Maldives has it all. But it's not just the setting that's impressive - the hotels and resorts boast some of the finest cuisine and wine collections in the world. You can savor fresh seafood, exotic spices, and local delicacies while sipping cocktails under the stars. And with many hotels offering LGBT-inclusive packages, you can enjoy intimate dinners and themed meals with your partner in total privacy and comfort. Almost every resort I have visited with my partner has gone out of their way to create a romantic dinner or sunset cocktail reception for us.
For gay travelers seeking a destination that combines natural beauty, LGBTQ+ acceptance, social delights, water sports, and exceptional accommodation and dining, the Maldives ticks all the boxes. Whether you're looking for a romantic escape or a fun-filled adventure, the Maldives offers something for everyone. So, pack your bags, book your flight, and get ready to experience the magic of the Maldives for yourself.
